Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the inquiry-based learning model in improving students’ understanding of science concepts at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) Darul Ibad Jember. The background of this research stems from the low level of students’ conceptual understanding of science due to the dominance of teacher-centered conventional methods. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. The research informants consisted of the principal, vice principal for curriculum, classroom teachers, and students. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed through data reduction, data display, and verification using content and interpretative analysis methods. The results reveal that the inquiry-based learning model effectively enhances students’ conceptual understanding of science through scientific investigation activities that engage students actively in discovering and constructing their own knowledge. Students become more critical, creative, and curious about natural phenomena around them. Furthermore, the implementation of the inquiry model increases learning motivation and fosters positive teacher-student interactions. In conclusion, the inquiry-based learning model is proven to be a highly effective and innovative instructional approach that should be widely applied in Madrasah Ibtidaiyah to improve scientific literacy and develop students’ scientific thinking skills.
